More detail to come...

ABOUT

The White Flag is a symbol of clean sea, a motive for everyone to take care about the environment. It's focused on raising awareness about the protection of water resources, the environment and living organisms. It aims on improving on the present state of the global problem of pollution of the oceans, lakes and rivers.

A SYMBOL OF CLEAN SEA

Global Underwater Awareness Association (GUWAA) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental ecological association which aims at cleaning up seas, rivers and lakes, as well as raising people's awareness about the consequences of inland water and sea pollution, toward greater ecological responsibility and action. It was founded by Mr. Kristijan Curavic, with the support of Mr. Bernie Ecclestone, and with the partnership of Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. One of the leading men in world water preservation is also a member of GUWAA, Mr. Francois Sarano, right hand of the legendary Jacques Yves Cousteau.

A MOTIVE FOR EVERYONE TO TAKE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT

All acquired funding is used for systematic cleaning and protection of the seabed, rivers, and lakes, therefore it’s very important that as much people as possible join our cause and support this initiative. In that way you also become an important part of the biggest world NGO which protects water resources to preserve them for present and future generations.

RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE PROTECTION OF WATER RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT AND LIVING ORGANISMS

Water makes around 60% of the human body. It’s the most important component in everyday life of humans, animals and plants. It’s crucial that the water we consume, in which we take a bath and do different activities (fishing, aquaculture, recreation …) is clean. Whilst generally worldwide importance is given to microbiological quality of water, cleanness of the seabed is mostly neglected. Numerous seabed, rivers and lakes are covered in waste. Among other things, the reason for this is that for many years the opinion prevailed that the sea is a big dump in which, after is thrown, the waste is not visible and it becomes someone else’s problem. In that way degradation of the waste is left to long-term physical and chemical processes that take place in the water medium. Some materials degrade for several hundred years, and for some it’s not even determined their decomposition time because there are no microorganisms that decompose them. Also, toxic compounds are released by their degradation that negatively affect surrounding organisms. If animals consume parts of waste by mistake (plastic waste mostly) the consequences can be fatal for them.

FOCUS ON ECOLOGY

GUWAA represents ecology and promotes its significance. It promotes diving as one of the tools which ecologists use for evaluation and seabed cleaning. It connects diving centers and ecological organizations worldwide to effectively react on ecological threats to oceans and other water resources. An important emphasis is placed on the education of the younger generation, as well as adults, to get familiar with the negative effects of pollution and methods of treatment and prevention.

PRESENT STATE IMPROVEMENT

As already mentioned, so far little attention has been given to cleaning of the seabed, rivers and lakes of waste, and sustainable development in countries around the world. As a pioneer, GUWAA draws attention to this global problem and is committed to a systematic and organized cleaning of waste and pollution prevention.

Guinness World Record LogoWe want to thank everyone who participated in this year's Global Underwater Cleanup and Protection Day! Because of the bad weather conditions, many diving centers worldwide had to postpone the cleanup and we didn't succeed to set a Guinness World Record.
Next year we are going to organize the 3rd World Underwater Cleanup and Protection Day and we will attempt to set the record again!
